Dr. Emillio Gabrielli
Brazil

Dr. Gabbrielli currently holds the position of Vice President Business Development for Toray Membrane USA, Inc., in Rio de Janerio, Brazil.  Emillio has 35 years experience in water. His first exposure to desalination was in 1975 while in Peru on a cooperation project between the governments of Italy and Peru. He was involved in the development and construction of a solar desalination plant to produce drinking water for a marginal community in the desert region of the north.

This experience was enough to convince Emilio to pursue a career in water resources development and protection, making of desalination his technical focus. His first projects included desalination plants in Libya, Algeria and Saudi Arabia based on EDR and on MSF technology associated to power generation.

In 1981 Emilio moved to Australia with Italimpianti and in1987 he joined Permutit (which was to become Permutit-Boby, then Thames Water Asia Pacific). With Permutit he played a key role, from both the technical and the executive side, in the design and construction of most of the desalination and reuse projects in Australia at the time. In particular he was involved in the zero-discharge schemes for coal-fired power stations like Bayswater, which is based on a mixture of technologies including RO and evaporators.

From 1995 Emilio spent a few years with Thames Water developing PPP projects, mainly in Indonesia, Spain, the Caribbean and Latin America. After 4 years as Managing Director of Thames Water do Brazil, in 2003 Emilio accepted the position of Executive Secretary of the Global Water Partnership (GWP). Headquartered in Sweden, GWP is an international network of institutions committed to the sustainable development and management of water resources. It was founded by the United Nations Development Program, the World Bank and the Government of Sweden. At GWP Emilio was able to continue to pursue his ideals of a better life for all through policies which lead to a more efficient, equitable and environmentally sound use of water.

After leaving the GWP in 2008, Emilio represented Befesa and Cadagua in Australia for few months then joined Toray Membrane USA, Inc. with a global role as VP Business Development, focused on Australia at first, then Latin America.

Emilio holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Bologna University.

He obtained a post-graduate specialization certificate in Computer Modelling at the same University as part of a Research Programme developed on the bases of his degree dissertation. The program was developed in cooperation between the Bologna University and the Milan Politecnico. During the course of the research Emilio discovered and demonstrated a new theorem of linear algebra, which was the subject of various publications.

Emilio has authored and co-authored over twenty publications. He has been active in IDA since its foundation and has served as a director and VP once.
