Mr. Gerard Canton
![]() France I started to work in the desalination industry with SIDEM in 1978, as a MED/MSF process engineer. Then I gain experience being responsible for the Start up and troubleshooting activities for distillation plants. In 1984, I was in charge of establishing a operating company in the Caribbean UCDEM for privatized BOOT contracts for delivering water to the French Indies Island, this was one of the earliest example of privatization in desalination industry. I am still running that Co as the Chairman and CEO.
In 1994, I was back in Paris as Commercial Director of Sidem, in charge of promoting and selling large MED plants, which lead to the success story of MED in Middle East Countries on turn key contracts, as well as EPC contracts for prestigious IWPPs. I hope I contributed to the dramatic growth of MED thermal distillation technology and its impact on desalination market with the success of Al Taweelah A1-53 MIGD in UAE, Hidd 60 MIGD in Bahrain, Marafiq 176 MIGD in Saudi Arabia and Fujeirah 100 MIGD. The largest single 8 MIGD MED trains in the world is now operating in Sharjah UAE. I am focusing on hybridization technologies and the future development of desalination and power market. Currently, I am Deputy Managing Director of Sidem and member of the Board.
