Educational programs constitute an important aspect of IDA’s activities. These include seminars and workshops, as well as an annual Scholarship and Fellowship Award. In addition, IDA has established a Young Leaders Program to enhance professional development opportunities for the next generation of leaders in the global desalination community.
IDA has established a scholarship fund (Channabasappa Memorial Scholarship) to assist young engineers and scientists to further their education in subjects related to desalination. This scholarship provides assistance for graduate students.
Monetary Award
The total maximum grant per student is 10,000 USD. The individual selected for scholarship must have other sources of funds to supplement this grant that will allow the student to complete graduate degree requirements. The usual award is 5,000 USD per semester with the second installment being paid after IDA has received a progress report from the student’s academic advisor.
Eligibility
Applicants must have graduated from an accredited university and must be from the top 10% of their class in science or engineering. The applicant must prove admission to a graduate program in desalination or water re-use and must exhibit leadership and achievement potential. Applicants must be IDA members.
Basis of Award Application
Applications are considered on the basis of undergraduate transcript, references (four are required, at least one must be from an IDA director or member) and motivation for a career in desalination or water technologies. The applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Committee, which will have at least two IDA members from universities. Application Procedure
The applicant must submit application documents by June 1st including evidence of other source of funding to supplement this scholarship, admission to a post graduate program, academic records and references. To download an application, click here.
The goal of the IDA Fellowship Award Program is to facilitate the advancement of global expertise in desalination and water reuse through the exchange of talents, knowledge and skills. Now in its third year, the Fellowship is considered one of the industry’s most prestigious awards, recognizing individuals with exceptional professional achievements and dedication to advancing desalination and water reuse.
In addition to a monetary award, this program provides recipients with an unprecedented opportunity to spend time with a host agency – a high profile public utility or well-respected research organization – working alongside colleagues in the desalination industry, gaining insights into the host agency’s operations, strategies and policies, and ultimately exchanging ideas with the global desalination community following this attachment. Through this process, the IDA Fellow becomes a conduit for knowledge transfer when he or she shares their learning with their own organization, as well as with other fellow professionals through IDA’s publications or presentations at major IDA events.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2010 Fellowship Award. We are pleased to announce that Water Corporation and Murdoch University, Perth, Western Australia are the host agencies for the 2010 program.
This is a unique opportunity to participate in a comprehensive program. Applications close April 15, 2010. For full details including the application form, click here. For questions on the program, please email Nancy Pagels at npagels@idadesal.org.
IDA’s new Young Leaders Program will be officially launched at the 2009 World Congress in Dubai. The goals of this exciting initiative are to help promote opportunities in the industry, support career advancement, and provide a forum for communication and the exchange of ideas among young professionals and the industry at large. The Young Leaders Program is open to any IDA member 33 years of age or under.
Best Papers Award
As part of the program launch, IDA will present an award of 5,000 USD for the best paper presented during the 2009 World Congress proceedings by a member of the Young Leaders Program. Any papers already submitted for the 2009 World Congress may be considered for the Award as long as the presenter is an IDA member 33 years old or younger. The papers will be ranked by a panel of nominated judges, each of whom possesses significant desalination experience.
To be eligible, the author must notify IDA that he or she meets the age criteria. Co-authors who have submitted a paper may change the presenter to give the Young Leader co-author an opportunity to win the Award. All correspondence should be directed to Nancy Pagels at npagels@idadesal.org. Please reference your paper title and log number.
Educational Tour
Another aspect of the Young Leaders Program is a promotional educational tour. Now being organized, the tour will include presentations and seminars delivered by regional IDA members, industry leaders and regional members of the Young Leaders Program. The aim of the tour is to promote IDA and the industry as a whole, as well as to reach young engineers and professionals as they take their first steps towards their future careers. Interested institutions, IDA members and YLP members may direct their inquiries comments and suggestions to npagels@idadesal.org.
Information on industry-related workshop will be available soon.
